Privacy Policy
Last updated 3 October 2026 · Version 0.1
This policy explains what Hujra knows about you, why, who else helps us run it, and what you can do about it. We have tried to keep it short and plain.
Hujra (the app, and the website at hujra.app) is run by [Owner full name], an individual based in [City, Country]. Questions or complaints: privacy@hujra.app.
The short version
- We collect only what Hujra needs to work.
- We do not sell your data. Hujra shows no adverts.
- Parents manage their children's accounts and can see, correct and delete their data.
- You can delete your account at any time. It is gone 7 days later.
What we collect
When you sign in
- Your mobile number, or your name and email from Google or Apple if you sign in with them.
- When you ask for a sign-in code, the internet address and a device code of the phone that asked, so we can stop people misusing the codes.
Your profile
- Your name (and your name in your own script, if you add it), gender, date of birth, city, state and country.
- A profile photo, a few lines about you, and the languages you know, if you add them.
- A contact email, if you add one.
Your location
- If you allow it, the app uses your phone's location while the app is open: to find mosques near you, to show the Qibla direction, to work out prayer times, and to switch between mosques you have saved.
- When you search for nearby mosques, your location is sent to our server to do the search. We do not store it.
- The app never uses your location in the background, when it is closed.
- Maps are drawn with OpenStreetMap, whose servers see which map area your phone asks for.
If you teach
- Your teaching details: courses, experience, languages, availability.
- Certificates you send us, and the results of checks, including the background check needed to teach children.
If you take a mosque or madrasa role
- Letters and documents you send to show your role.
- An ID photo, if we ask for one. It is used only to check your name, and it is deleted as soon as a decision is made.
What you write and do
- Articles, khutbas, books and announcements you publish.
- Class chat messages. These are kept for 90 days, then deleted.
- Class attendance, lesson records and homework results that your teacher keeps.
- Reports you make about content or mosques.
- Things you keep for yourself: habits, bookmarks, reading progress, quiz answers, prayer alerts and mosques you follow.
- Interests you choose and which topics you read (counts only), to put content you like first. Private; deleted with your account.
- Job posts, job applications and CVs, if you use the jobs section.
Your phone
- A notification token, so we can send notifications to your phone.
Why we use it
- To let you sign in and keep your account safe.
- To show you mosques, prayer times, classes, articles and books.
- To run classes and keep children safe in them.
- To check teachers and mosque roles before they are trusted.
- To send you notifications you asked for, such as class reminders and mosque news.
- To deal with reports, abuse and complaints.
We use your data only for running Hujra. We do not use it for adverts, and we do not sell it.
Who else handles it
We use a few services to run Hujra. Each one gets only what it needs.
- Google: Google sign-in, and Firebase, which delivers notifications to your phone.
- Apple: Sign in with Apple, on iPhone.
- LiveKit: carries the sound (and video, where used) of live classes. Classes are not recorded unless recording is switched on with consent. Recordings, when made, are deleted after 90 days.
- MSG91: sends sign-in codes by SMS.
- DigitalOcean: our servers, files and backups, in Bangalore, India.
- An email service: to send email codes, once we set one up. We will name it here.
We share information with the police or a court only when the law requires it, or when someone, especially a child, is at risk.
Children
- Young children do not sign in. A parent or guardian makes and manages their account.
- We collect only what is needed for their classes: name, date of birth, gender, and their class records.
- We follow India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, which asks for a parent's consent for a child's data.
- Parents can see, correct and delete their child's data at any time, in the app or by writing to us.
- We do not track children or show them adverts.
How long we keep it
- Class chat: 90 days.
- Class recordings (only made with consent): 90 days.
- ID photos for mosque roles: deleted as soon as a decision is made.
- Your account: until you delete it. A deleted account is gone 7 days after you ask, as described below.
- Backups: kept for up to 30 days, then replaced.
When you delete your account
You can delete your account in the app (Profile, then Account, then Delete my account), or at hujra.app/delete-account. It happens 7 days after you ask; signing in before then lets you cancel. Then:
- Deleted: your name, phone number, email, photo, date of birth, gender, about, languages, city, your Google or Apple link, your devices, your notifications, your class chat messages, your private uploads (certificates, letters, documents), your job applications and CVs, your seeker and teaching profiles, and private things such as habits, bookmarks, reading progress, quiz answers, prayer alerts, mosques you follow and class requests.
- Your choice: things you published for others to read (articles, khutbas and library books) are either deleted, or kept with the name "Former member".
- Closed: job posts you made.
- Kept with the mosque: announcements you posted for a mosque or madrasa, changes you made to its page, and prayer times you set. These belong to the mosque, so they stay, shown as "Former member".
- Kept for others, without your name: records that belong to other people, such as a teacher's attendance and lesson records, homework results, reviews you gave, reports you made and records a mosque keeps. These show "Former member".
- Your children: the children's accounts you manage are deleted too, unless another guardian also manages that child.
- If you teach: your open classes are cancelled and your students and their parents are told.
- Mosque roles: they end, and the mosque team is told.
A short note that an account was deleted is kept in our safety log. Copies in backups disappear within 30 days.
Keeping it safe
- Your data travels encrypted.
- Private files, such as certificates, letters and CVs, are never public. Only the people who need to see them can.
- Only a small number of trusted people can see personal data, and only to do their job.
No system is perfect. If something goes wrong that puts your data at risk, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
Your rights
You can:
- See the data we hold about you.
- Correct it, mostly yourself in the app. For your date of birth or gender, write to us.
- Delete it, by deleting your account.
- Withdraw consent, for example to location (in your phone's settings), notifications, or a class recording. Withdrawing does not undo what was done before.
- Name someone to act for you if you are unable to.
To use any of these rights, write to privacy@hujra.app from the phone number or email on your account.
Complaints (grievance officer)
If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, write to our grievance contact: [Owner full name], privacy@hujra.app. We will reply within 7 days and try to sort it out within 30 days. If you are still unhappy, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Hujra grows. If a change matters, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect. The date at the top shows the latest version.
